Now they are lit by gas during festivals. The design is Roman - the prow of Carthaginian galleys protrude. The white statues personify Russian rivers - Volga, Dniper, Volkov and Neva.

Building near St. Isaac's Cathedral

 
{short description of image}

Dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral - St Isaac of Dalmatia, a Byzantine monk whose feast day happened to be on Peter the Great's birthday. It was designed and built by Auguste de Monteferand for Alexander I. It took from 1818 to 1842 to complete the construction and then until 1852 to finish the interior decoration. The main dome was covered with 220 pounds of gold.

They represeant Faith, Justice, Wisdom and Might. Nicholas is wearing the uniform of the Cavalry Guards Regiment. The statue is by Peter Klodt (1859).

As the name implies the museum specializes in art work from Russia including the many ethnic groups such as Inguish, Tatars, Bashkirs, Chuvash and Ossetians

General Barclay de Tolly was Russia's minister of war and commander of First West Army up to the Battle of Borodino in 1812. The statue is in front of the other colonade of the Kazan Cathedral opposite that of Marshal Kutuzov.

Yeliseev's delicatessen on the corner of Nevski Prospect and Malaya Sadovaya street, opposite Ostrovski square. This, like the Singer Building, is a fine example of Style-Moderne architecture. The Yeliseev dynasty began with a peasant wine merchant in 1813 and within 2 generations owned a variety of food establishements. The building was designed by Gavriil Baranovskii in 1901. The interior features stained glass windows, marble counters and crystal chandeliers.

Theee statue was designed in 1873 by Mikhail Mikeshin behind her is the Aleksandriinski Drama Theater designed by Carlo Rossi (1828-32) in his favored Neo-Classical style. Above the Corinthian columns Apollo rides his chariot created by Stepan Pimenov. The theater and square are named for Aleksandr Ostrovski (1823-86). Directly behind the theater is the street considered the masterpiece of urban architecture - Street Zodchevo Rossi.

The Baroque Strogonov Palace on the corner of Nevski Prospect and Moyka Canal was built in 1752-4 by Bartolomeo Rastrelli (who designed Catherine Palace also) for Count Sergei Strogonov. It is now part of the Russia Museum and contains special exhibitions.

The archway of the former General Staff building - now housing part of the Hermitage collection - The building was designed by Carlo Rossi in 1819 on order of Tsar Aleexander I after the tsar bought and tore down the private houses in the area. The arch is another memorial to the victory over Napoleon. On it Victory rides a six-horsed chariot held by two Roman soldiers.
