These hearings were remarkable
for their failure. The results were well understood by many others, namely that
there was a serious ideological conflict between Soviet Russia and China that
was being played out in action. And this conflict directly influenced both
countries' relations with Viet Nam. Yet the US Government continued to pursue
policies in VietNam that ignored this conflict.

here are Bolotnikov 1606-1607: Razin 1670-1671; Bulavin 1707-1708; and Pugachev
1773-1774. It is clear that none of them lasted very long. Of course, all are
mentioned in standard history texts, but it is nice to have the four here in
one place in which the author can compare them, and the causes and effects of
their revolts.

How Russia is Ruled

Harvard Univ. Press,

Soviet government
|
The author writes in
the preface: "The aim of this book is to analyze the physiology, as well
as the anatomy, of Soviet totalitarianism and to communicate a sense of the
living political processes in which Soviet rulers and subjects are
enmeshed." "The plan of this volume can be briefly summarized. Part
One presents a historical analysis of the forces and factors that produced the
Bolshevik Revolution and transformed its character once power had been
attained. Part Two is concerned with the party and its changing role in theory
and practice. In Part Three other instruments of rule are examined - the
Constitution and the hierarchy of Soviets, bureaucracy, the police, and the
armed forces. Part Four portrays the impact of the Soviet pattern of controls
on factory and farm." Today we may consider this from the historical part
of view.

History of the Red Army, 1918-1938
|
Duke Univ. Press, Durham, 1985,
430 pgs., index, notes, appendices
|
Soviet History
|
The authors secretly combed
available sources and eye-witnesses in Russia to compile their history of the
Red Army. They accuse Stalin and his henchmen of severely damaging the army in
the 1930's and then failure to conduct the war effectively. They believe the
initial disasters in 1941-42 were due to the purge of the officer corps and
related incompetence.

Early Modern Military history
|
Despite his effort to adhere to
standard Marxist-Leninist ideology Prof. Razin was censured by Stalin for the
apparent effort to upstage Stalin as the authority on military affairs. The
book describes not only Russian topics but European and Asian as well. Chapters
include Russia in 17th century, but also Western Europe and China from the 16th
century. The reader can overlook the Marxism and find much interesting
information. The illustrations and maps are fine. But the book also can be read
as an example of Marxist ideas. This is but one of Prof. Razin's works on the
whole span of military history.

subversion. Communism is a revolutionary movement, a political force which
operates in a social environment, which recruits its members from various
classes of society, and marshals its armies against various political
opponents." The author includes description of the Chechens.

Yeltsin's Russia: myths and
Reality
|
Carnegie Endowment for
International Peace, Wash. D. C. 1999, 341 pgs., index, end notes, paper back
|
Soviet Politics
|
The author credits Boris Yeltsin
with being the most important actor in bringing Gorbacherv's rule while also
preventing a Communist Party restoration. The result was the basically peaceful
dissolution of the Soviet Union. However, she notes that he was much more
successful in ending the old than in building a new. The Chechen war is
discussed. But it is interesting that there is no mention of Putin. The author
provides a very detailed history of the dissolution of the USSR and Yeltsin's
years in power. She comments that a major mistake of Yeltsin is failure to find
a strong and predictable successor - that is a peaceful transition to the
future. She asks "Why were Yeltsin and his team unable to use the
opportunities that history gave them to build a solid base for liberal
democracy in Russia?" She predicts, "The future of Russia's
transformation depends on whether its ruling class learns to temper its
selfishness and to rectify its moral and political behavior.' Today, we have
learned the results. This is still a very valuable book.

The author states that: This
essay offers a novel explanation of the rise of Lenin and Stalin. It attempts
to view the emergence of Russian communism as an integral part of European and
global history, treating it, as it should have been from the start, as a
problem of comparative studies, not as an isolated phenomenon to be explained
largely from Russian conditions alone." Well, in my experience there was
plenty of study of communism not focused on Russia alone. And the Soviet
government was included in courses of comparative government.

California History

Herb Caen was a famous San
Francisco newspaper writer (local picture) who probably knew more about the
city than anyone else. His text is about life and people in the city. He coined
the phrase - Baghdad by the Bay and includes many other clever terms in his
text. The special photography for this book made by Max Yavno provides an
excellent history of the city, but they no not have captions. Many are placed
reasonably near the text, but only a person very familiar with the city would
recognize some scenes..

At one point Franklin writes:
"About this time there was a cry among the people for more paper money,
only fifteen thousand pounds being extant in the province, and that soon to be
sunk. The wealthy inhabitants opposed any addition, being against all paper
currency from the apprehension that it would depreciate, as it had done in New
England to the injury of all creditors." Franklin authored and printed a
tract favoring more paper money. When this legislation was approved he received
a lucrative contract to print it. - And then more and more.

The author summarises the lessons
from the recent wars. These include the roles of space, air power, smart

role of advanced technology close ground combat remains critical;. The proper
balance between conventional and irregular warfare must be determined. The
author contrasts 'Western' and Indian thinking on these issues.

For a full appreciation of fine
art painted before it deteriorated in modern times. Until then the subject in
the painting was the central point and it was identified frequently with use of
specific symbols. Or the artist included symbols for related purposes. And many
of the paintings were about Classical Greek and Roman subjects of Christian
subjects. Thus a book of this kind provides key information to the modern
viewer that was obvious to views at the time the painting was produced.

The author correctly describes
the illness of modern society in materialism. He advocates a return to medieval
Christian concepts of a just society. He has a very romantic conception of what
Western European medieval society was really like. And he has a very optimistic
concept about the possibility of a 'return to Christian order' in modern
society. We will be lucky if the practice of Christianity survives the twin
assaults of Islam and atheism.

War and Gold: A 500 Year History
of Empires, Adventures, and Debt
|
Public Affairs, N. Y., 2014, 424
pgs., index, bibliography, end notes
|
Economic History
|
The author jumps through the
first 300 years rather quickly but his real subject is the last 100 years, so
the first part is just background. The role of debt is the main issue and he
describes it well. The point about 'war' is that throughout history financing
war has been a major cause of government debt. The point about gold is the
argument over its role in the money supply.
His subject is the role of money (which includes debt) in the modern
economy. The author is concerned with explaining the many causes that have been
written about the financial crisis of 2008. He includes much information and
good analysis but also leaves out some critical factors, such as the creation
and role of 'petrodollars' since the 1970's. But he correctly describes the
impact of the flood of silver into Europe after 1500.

Medieval History
|
A remarkable study of two
medieval documents, together. One is about the Viking voyages to Greenland and
beyond and the other is about the journey of Friar John de Plano Carpini to the
Mongol capital in Central Asia. One could not consider two such different
travels at that time. One document is a world map on vellum that includes thew
western ocean with Greenland, Iceland and Vineland. The other on velum and
paper, is the report of the Carpini mission by a friar who calls himself C. de
Bridia. Both are otherwise unknown. They were discovered much later. Both are
so unique and important that their real validity must be questioned. Are they
counterfeit? The editors here believe they are genuine, but recognize that they
may be contentious. This study includes other maps and texts for comparisons.

secret or in code for contemporary viewers. They well knew their classical and
Biblical sources as well as artistic conventions. But for readers today such
descriptions are essential. The book is organized by topics with the excellent
illustrations provided as examples for teaching. For instance - color,
perspective, gesture, scholarship, allegory, Bible, Saints and many more.
