View of side of the kaponier, shows embrasures for cannon. The kaponier was an Italian fortification invention, as the name suggests. It was a low fortification placed across a fortress ditch with cannon that could sweep the bottom of the ditch. It would be hidden from enemy view from outside the glacis and also its roof was reenforced to withstand artillery fire.
