The statue of Catherine II in Ostrovski
Square next to Nevski Prospect. Theee statue was designed in 1873 by Mikhail
Mikeshin behind her is the Aleksandriinski Drama Theater designed by Carlo
Rossi (1828-32) in his favored Neo-Classical style. Above the Corinthian
columns Apollo rides his chariot created by Stepan Pimenov. The theater and
square are named for Aleksandr Ostrovski (1823-86). Directly behind the theater
is the street considered the masterpiece of urban architecture - Street
Zodchevo Rossi.
