Close-up of the Sampson fountain - It was not commissioned until 1734, to commemorate the Russian victory of Sweden on St. Sampson's Day at the Battle of Poltava in 1709. Sampson is holding thee mouth of a lion from which a huge jet rises 72 feet in the air. This is a copy of the original which was stolen during World War II. |
