was torn down at Stalin's order so his big military parades could pass through
here into Red Square. In Tsarists times the chapel had a special icon of the
Iberian Virgin to which all Russians paid respects. They are standing in the
brass circle the center of which has a marker for Kilometer Zero from which
road distances are measured.

but was torn down by Stalin and is now rebuilt by Moscow Mayor Luzhkov. The

The Bogoyavlenski (Epiphany)
Cathedral (1690's) of the 13th century monastery of the same name is being
restored. The white nalichniki, window surrounds and other baroque decorations
set of the crimson walls. It is in Kitai Gorod just a block behind GUM, but
many tour guides skip showing it.

The gigantic statue of Peter I
commissioned by Moscow mayor, Luzhkov, from his favorite sculptor, Zurab
Tsereteli. It stands on the upstream point of the island between the Moscow
river and the water diversion canal almost opposite the rebuilt Cathedral of
Christ the Savior. Peter stands on the deck of a frigate that itself is on top
of a column of water and smaller ships and flags. The whole thing is 59 meters
in height. In the background is the upper part of the famous Moscow chocolate
factory.
