RUSSIA - KIZHI ISLAND

In this section we have
photography made at Kizhi Island during our cruise there in July 2005. For
other places along our cruises via the Volga and Russian lakes please see the
Volga river section

Dawn at Kizhi Island as our
cruise ship just arrived. The Church of the Intercession can barely be seen
behind the huge Resurection Cathedral and bell tower.
Kizhi Island is a favorite stop
for the cruise ships betwen Moscow and St. Petersburg. Our ship was the first
to arrive this day near dawn but soon there were seven more ships tied up one
next to the other. Here some can be seeen at the dock beyond this swampy land.
Another view of Kizhi Island at
dawn - the Resurection Cathedral is in front of the Church of the Intercession.
The tourists begin streaming
across the dock for their walk to the Kizhi Island churches.

deck of the several cruise ships tied up one next to the other as their
passengers walk to Kizhi Island.
The first batch of tourists has
departed the now empty dock - the churches of Kizhi Island stand waiting in the
distance.
The Cathedral of the
Transfiguration stands on the right and the Church of the Intercession is on
the left.
While walking to the cathedral we
pass an exhibition that illustrates construction techniques for these wooden
buildings.

The Cathedral of the
Transfiguration and Church of the Intercession are still quite far away as we
walk on Kizhi Island.
