The Swedish king Charles XII invaded along the direct route to Moscow but was held by Peter, so Charles turned south into Ukraine to gain supplies and allies. Peter followed to the fortified town, Poltava. The blue circle indicates where the Swedes camped during the terrible winter of 1708-09. |
