Peter Alexeivich I & Catherine I - Peter the Great strongly disliked his first wife, to whom he was reluctantly married as a young man and took Catherine as his mistress but eventually married her and had her proclaimed empress. When he died without having named an heir she was proclaimed ruler by Menshikov and the powerful inner circle of Peter's advisors.
