He was the eldest son of
Mstislav I Vladimirovich from Mstislav's second
wife, a daughter of Dmitrii Zavidich, posadnik of Novgorod. He married the
daughter of Svyatoslav Davidovich Svyatoshi, prince
of Chernigiv. His sons were Ivan, prince of
Novgorod; Mstislav, prince of Novgorod;
Vladimir, prince of Novgorod. They are shown on this
family chart. He was prince of
Novgorod (1117-1132), and (1132-1136); prince of
Pereyaslavl in 1132; prince of Vishgorod in 1136; and finally Pskov in 1137.
Coming from the powerful family of Mstislav I, his brothers included
Izyaslav II, prince of Kyiv and
Rostislav Mstislavich, prince of Smolensk.
