PRONSK PRINCIPALITY

History:
The date of the foundation of Pronsk is not known. It appeared by the beginning of the 12th century as one of the towns of the Severski lands. It was first mentioned in the Nikon Chronicle in the second quarter of the 12th century and in the Suzdal' Chronicle under 1186. It is named for the Prona river. At first Pronsk together with Ryazan and Murom were in the compositio nof the Chernigov principality. At the beginning of the 12th century after the separation of the Murom-Ryazan lands it went with them. ~It was then in the Ryazan principality as an independent udel given to rule to Vsyevolod Glebovich , grandson of the Ryazan prince Rostislav. From then on it was engaged almost constantly in terrible battle with Ryazan to maintain its independence. It frequently was taken back into Ryazan. A major struggle took place during the reign of the grand prince of Ryazan Vasilii Ivanovich (1464-1483) and the first part of the 16th century in connection with the elimination of the Ryazan grand principality by Moscow. Thus Pronsk was also incorporated into Muscovy. The family of the Pronsk princes died out in the 17th century.
