This map from the West Point Atlas depicts
the situation at Borodino about 1600. By now the French have captured both the
fletches and the Rayevski redoubt and the Russians have fallen back to form a
final defense line as shown. Ataman Platov has returned from his raid. He did
succeed in diverting some of Eugene's troops and delaying the assault on the
Rayevski, but might have accomplished a lot more if he had been given orders
and had followed them aggressively. Note in comparison with the initial
situation at 0600 (map 116) that Now Bagavout holds the Russian right wing,
Docturov's corps has shifted southward and Ostermann-Tolstoi's corps has moved
from Docturov's right to his left flank to fill in the Russian line. This map
doesn't indicate it, but the entire Russian reserve artillery remains out of
action to the rear. The atlas text gives losses as French: 28,000 to 31,000 and
Russian: 45,000.
