This map from the West Point Atlas depicts
the situation at Borodino at the start of the battle, around 0630. Following a
massive cannonade, the French corps of Davout (I Corps) and Ney (II Corps)
start their assault of the three Russian fletches held by Borozdin. Ponyatovski
is slow in moving his Polish V Corps forward through the woods to attack
Tutchkov I at Utlitsa. On the French left flank Eugene is about to drive the
Russians out of Borodino village (starting around 8 AM), but fail to capture
the bridge there. He then has to shift Grouchy (cavalry) and Morand's infantry
division south across the Kolotcha stream via a pontoon bridge.
Note the strength figures given here - Napoleon 130,000 total of which 86,000
infantry, 28,000 cavalry, 16,000 artillery and engineers, with 587 guns.
Kutuzov 120,800 total of which 72,000 infantry, 17,500 cavalry, 14,500
artillery and engineers, 7,000 Cossacks, 10,000 militia and 640 guns. Compare
with Beskrovni's figures.
