This map from the West Point Atlas depicts the situation during the battle of Smolensk when Ney is assaulting the King's bastion and Davout is attacking the main city gate. The city is already being held only by a Russian rear guard while Prince Bagration slips away eastward north of the river and Barclay starts assembling his forces to march northeastward.
