The summer Church of St Nicholas (1720)
(right) near the kremlin was built after a terrible fire destroyed much of the
town. It is a fine example of Suzdal architecture. It was built on the site of
the former first monastery in Suzdal, St Nicholas, which was connected to the
kremlin by gates and a bridge. The octagonal bell tower is exceptionally
decorated with rows of kokoshniks and niches. The inward-curving edges of the
tent roof are unique to Suzdal. It is the oldest building with a tent shaped
roof and the only one with a helmet shaped dome. Next to it is the winter
Church of the Nativity of Christ. (1775)
