Smolni Convent - girls school founded by
Empress Elizabeth Petrovna - The cathedral was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli
in 1748. Empress Catherine II didn't like either the design or Elizabeth so she
stopped work in 1762. Emperor Nicholas I commissioned Vasilii Stasov to
complete the project in 1835. The convent is located at the turn of the Neva on
the northeast corner of downtown Petersburg, the location of the former naval
tar works. Lenin made his headquarters in the Smolni Institute, next door.
