ROSTRAL COLUMN

 
  Rostral column  
 

One of the two Rostral columns on the Strelka point of Vasilevski Island. They were designed as lighthouses by Thoman de Thomon i n1810. They used oil lamps and then gas torches. They are still lite for Navy Day celebrations. The columns have Roman style ship's prows. The four seated figures represent Russia's great rivers, the Neva, Volga, Dniper and Volkov.
