View from the palace over the cascade before the fountains are turned on. Now there is the reflecting pool but in Peter's time this was a canal opening to the Gulf of Finland seen in the distance and his small ships could deliver people directly up to the palace. Note the 22 marble basions on either side of the granite lined canal. At the end closest to the palace on either side are colonnades designed by Voronikin. |
