ST ISAAC'S CATHEDRAL

St Isaac Cathedral - designed by Auguste de Montferrand and built between 1818 and 1858. It rests on thousands of wooden poles sunk into the swamp. The dome is covered with 220 pounds of gold leaf. The angels around the dome were made by Josef Hermann. Each of the red granite columns in the porticos weighs 125 tons.
