Newly elected Tsar Mikhail Romanov was concerned about the defense of Rostov. He had Dutch engineers come to lay out one of the first of the new style bastion trace fortifications around the town. Here we are standing on the rampart of one of the curtain walls looking at the side of one of the bastions.
