The Pashkov house - When one drives past the
Kremlin on the wide Manezhnaya street from the Boshoi Kammeniye bridge this
huge building rises on the high bluff opposite the Kremlin walls. One is
surprised to learn that this was a private home - mansion actually - built in
1784-8 for the multimillionare Captain Pytor Pashkov. This Neo-Classical
structure conformed to the style then beginning prominence in Russia.
Thearchitect was possibly Vasili Bazhenov, who built many neo-classical
mansions. The imposing facde above us is actually the rear side. The entrance
is around on Starovagonovskaya lane where it is hemmed in by modern buildings
but through a gate next to the Church of at Old Vagonov.
