  Church of Troitsi

Church of Troitsi, chto u Sukharevoi bashni na Listakh, (Church of the Trinity that is by the Sukharev tower on Listi), 1650-1661, on Sretenka street by the Sadovaya - Sukharevya ring (now the Garden Ring) near where the famous Sukharev gate tower was on the wall of Zemli gorod. This is the extension of Bolshaia Lubyanka street so one can easily walk here from Lubyanka square past the Sretinski monastery. It was built in the streltsi slaboda (quarter). The church is historically very important for many reasons. The name, na listakh, came because on the fence for a long time in the 18th century hung and were sold common people's paintings that were called "lubochni" (meaning cheap popular prints) but in earlier times as "listi". With the establishment of the first printing press by Ivan IV the making of 'lubochni' became quite popular and they were made in the neighboring quarter, that of the pechatniki, the printers. These showings on the fence (wall) and sales continued into the 20th century. Today collectors pay big money for originals from this period.

At this church in 1632 there was an important wooden cemetary church and in 1650 a stone church was built for the streltsi who had 500 homes around there. In 1657 the church was not yet completed because then the Patriarch Nikon complained that it was being built without his approval and ordered the work to cease and the church starosta was excommunicated for his error. Then the local streltzi under their commander, Vasili Pushechnikov, in 1667 -71 began their campaign to Astrakhan and there defeated the cossacks and brought Stenka Razin to Moscow. Then Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich to do a good turn for the streltsi gave them as a gift 150,000 bricks to build their church. His gift provided most of the shape, the church utensils and furnishing. The church was completed in 1671, but in 1689 during the fire it was heavily damaged. The young Tsar Peter, desiring to gain favor with the important regiment against the rebellion of Fed'ka Shcheglovit, gave the streltsi 700 rubles to repair the church. There are two chapels in the church - first is Pokrova Pressvyatoi Bogoroditsi, built in 1680 as a result of the successful streltsi campaign on 1678 to Chigirin against Ottoman Sultan Selim who was then attacking Ukraine. That chapel burned in the fire of 1772 and was rebuilt with the donation of the industrialist Pankrati Kolosov. The second chapel was built to the right in 1680 in the name of Ivan of Damascus, but in 1805 the name was changed to that of Metropolitan Saint Alexei of Moscow. The bell tower was built in 1788.
