This map depicts the Polish siege of Smolensk
in 1609-123 during the "Time of Troubles". The camp of King Sigismund
III is west (left) of the city. The Hungarians and Zaporozhie Cossacks have
their camp east (right) of the city. To the north, across the river, are the
camps of Hetman Pototski and Dorogostaiski. The large Roman numerals depict the
dates of assaults - I 25-27 Sept 1609; II 19-20 July 1610; III 11 Aug. 1610; IV
21 Nov. 1610; V 3 June 1611. The direction of these is shown by the hacher
arrows. The Russian commander in the city was Voyevode Shein. The inset map at
upper right shows that the previous Polish border was west of Smolensk, just
east of Orsha. The small arabic numerals show gates: 1 Dneprovski; 2
Lazaryevski; 3 Kriloshevski; 4 Avraamievski; 5 Yeleninski; 6 Malakhovski; 7
Kopititski; 8 Pyatnitski. 10 in the center is the Uspenski cathedral.
