1855-58, Cavalry and Dragoons, Note the black felt hat with brim turned up on one side and fastened with an eagle, worn for the first time during this period, at first by the newly created cavalry (1854). Field officers wore a hat with gold cord and three feathers while otheer officers wore a worsted cord and two feathers. Enlisted men has a single feather. The dragoons, mounted here, were on the way out by this time.
