they are all still wearing the shako. The rest of the basic uniform remained
similar to this during the Civil War except for trimmings. The first
Lieutentant with has back to the cannon is a quartermaster with a pompon 2/3
buff and 1/3 Saxony-blue. The pompons of the General Staff and Staff Corps were
in two colors, 2/3 buff below and various colors for branches above. Enlisted
men had coats trimmed and faced with the branch color and they had a band of
the same color on their hats. The Artillery First Sergeant at attention at the
left wears the Artillery scarlet colors. The trousers were light blue, but
general officers and general staff officers wore blue trouseres. The stripe
down the side was of the branch color
