This diagram from the U. S. Military
Academy text depicts the deployment of a Roman army - This is developed from
the description in Polybius which may be the legion toward the end of the 2nd
Punic War. Note that initially the velites form in front of the hastati. There
is no actual original source that describes in detail the manner in which an
'allied legion' or alae was formed ,but the presumption is that it was similar
to the Roman legion. However, Polybius wrote that at Cannae the Romans formed
up in an unusual way - with each maniple deeper than wide and less space
between maniples. The 'cohort' shown on the left was a later
development. |
