Reviewer comment:
There has been a huge outpouring of books and articles on Machiavelli since
1960, including a terrific new translation and commentary on his book - Art
of War. But the format of this short work consisting of 18 essays on
various aspects of the title question is useful for student discussion. The
following essays are divided into categories: Immoral Cynic or Liberal Realist?
- Machiavelli the Patriot -- A Product and Spokesman of Renaissance Italy -
Political Scientist of Opportunist? - and - The Contemporary Outlook
