Reviewer Comment:
When each of the 4 volumes of Delbruck's History of the Art of War in the
Framework of Political Historywere published in the 1980's I avidly
purchased and studied them and have used them ever since. What a shock, only
now, to discover Professor Bucholz published very important books based on a
huge amount of personal research in Dr. Delbruck's live and works at that time.
This volume and his Delbruck's Modern Military History, are greatly
enlightening and should have been studied along with the "History'. I had
no idea of Delbruck's personal connections with the Prussian and Imperial
German royalty, or his military career, or his academic conflicts with both
German military and academy establishment, or his publications during and after
World War I. All of those provide significant insights into his 4 volumes of
history of warfare.
As Professor Bucholz notes in his introduction, "The obscurity and
complexity of Delbruck's life reflect the mixture of science and politics in
his career". And by 'politics' I infer that he means both Delbruck's
personal encounter with the personnel politics of the university and army; and
with the domestic and international politics of the era.
In his chapter on Bibliographic essay Dr. Bucholz demonstrates three
interrelated amazing subjects: 1 is that Delbruck was a fanactic 'pack rat' on
saving every scrap of paper he ever saw - 1: the volume now housed in to major
archives and other, private, places is astouding: 2 to amount of dedicated time
and effort Dr. Bucholtz devoted to devouring all this material is also
astounding; 3 that Delbruck's very significant role and influence in pre-WWI,
during, and post-WWI Germany has not been adequately described in academic
studies then is disappointing.
