The Affair at the Bulganek River, 19 Sept 1854. A. J. Barker describes this event in his The War against Russia. As the Allied army marched south it came to the shallow Bulganek River. Across the stream were about 2000 Russian cavalry on the lower slope of a plain that rose into the distance. Further south and above this slope were about 6000 Russian infantry. But these could not be seen by the British cavalry by the stream. As Lord Cardigan began to deploy his small cavalry force to attack, Lord Raglan issued orders to support Cardigan with cavalry and infantry, but only to enable him to withdraw successfully. The view here is from the height on which Lord Raglan and his staff observed events. The painting appears to show Lord Lucan's 17th Lancers and 8th Hussars moving forward to support on the left and the horse artillery moving forward on the right. In the middle distance are Cardigan's four squadrons and beyond them the Russians are firing, which resulted in wounding of for British cavalrymen.
