A map depicting the location of the Light
Brigade as it rode through the Russian field artillery position in the North
Valley at Balaklava. The remaining British troopers with Lord Cardigan still
leading, realized they were about to be surrounded by Russian lancers and
Cossacks, so they turned and withdrew back down the same valley, still under
intense fire from the Russians on the Causeway. Also shown is the location of
the British Heavy Brigade, also deployed in the North Valley and the French
cavalry which was sweeping Russian forces on the Fedokine heights, which
greatly assisted the Light Brigade during its subsequent wirthdrawal. Just
south of the Heavy Brigade is the Causeway height with the several redoubts
containing the British artillery which the Russians had captured. Those
redoubts were the intended target for the Light Brigade attack.
