This diagram shows the start position of the
Light Brigade at the west end of North Valley and its path through the valley
to the point where it has almost reached the Russian artillery and cavalry. The
Russians had occupied the redoubts along Causeway height and were easily firing
into the brigade's right flank. More Russians were on the Fedokine heights
firing into the brigade's left flank. Capt Nolan was killed instantly at the
very beginning of the charge. It appears that he was trying to alert Lord
Cardigan, who was leading the charge, to the fact that Lord Raglan's mission
for the brigade was to sieze the cannon and redoubts on the Causeway, not the
Russian field artillery at the other end of the valley. The British Heavy
Brigade is shown to the right rear of the Light Brigade's initial position.
