BALAKLAVA BATTLE -
CRIMEAN WAR

  map

This map from Kinglake's book shows Balaklava harbor at bottom and the narrow route via Kadikoi and then Causway to the north west up onto Sapun Gor. It shows Canrobert's hill on the right, which was occupied by a Turkish garrison with cannon prior to the battle but was the first defensive work captured during the initial Russian attack. The Highlanders held a low ridge in front of the entrance to Balaklava harbor. A small Russian cavalry detachment advanced but was driven off by several volleys and brief cannon fire. Then the Heavy Cavalry brigade began crossing to assist the Highlanders but was diverted up onto the Causway height when a much larger Russian cavalry force crossed the height. The Heavy Brigade stopped, turned and then attacked the Russian cavalry driving them back across the height. Meanwhile Russian infantry captured several redoubts along the causeway taking the cannon there and dispersing the Turkish gunners. Lord Raglan ordered two British infantry divisions to march down off the height but they were too slow to join in the action..
