Beskrovni map Sept 20, 1854, overall view in
Crimea, inset shows allied march from landing at Evpatoria - The red lines show
Menshikov's initial withdrawal of his field army from Sevastopol to
Bakhchesarai - note his rear guard just passed the Mekenzi Farm as the Allied
advance guard crossed behind it. Then other red lines show Menshikov's return
to occupy the "north fort' and establish a position at Chorgun.
- The timing of these marches is not clear in the map. The sequence was as
follows: First Menshikov moved from around Bakhchisarai with most troops into
Sevastopol. Then the Allies landed near Efpatoria and marched toward Alma river
(not shown) Then after battle of Alma as allies resumed march south, Menshikov
first withdrew into Sevastopol and then marched most of the field army out of
the city back through Mackenzi farm to around Bakchisarai as the allies also
marched through Mackenzi farm and then to Balaklava. The van of the Allied
forces touched the rear guard of the Russian force without either side
understanding just what was happening. Menshikov kept a sizable garrison in
Sevastopol. Then moved some troops back south to Chorgun area. The allies
established the British supply port at Balaklava and the French port on the
other coast near the city. The French took the western end of the siege line
and the British took the eastern (right) side.
