On this map from Kinglake's book I have shown
the locations from which most of the photographs in the collection were taken.
The map itself shows the British on the left and French on the right as they
deploy in preparation for crossing the Alma River to assault the Russians on
the ridge line. Note that the Russians did not hold the section of the ridge
near the sea because they thought it was too steep for infantry to climb and
also because the area could be fired on by the guns of the allied navy.
