Blow up of section from Stanford's Bird's Eye
View of the Seat of War in the Crimea, Third Edition showing panorama of siege.
This map courtesy of the Library of Congress. Facing Sevastopol are the French
(on left) and British (on right) siege lines in zigzag blue. Along the Sapun
Gor ridge line is the defensive position to secure the rear and right flank
from the Russian field army. The British port and supply base at Balaklava is
off map at lower right. The French supply base is off the left side of the map.
The Charge of the Light Brigade took place in North Valley, that is just north
of the Causway height that is a dark line stretching east near the lower right
of the picture. We see that the Russian defensive fortifications could only
hold a small section of the hills south of the city. Note the Russian boom and
sunken ships closing the harbor mouth. The Cherniya river flows into the head
of Sevastopol harbor at the center right side of the picture. Just north of it
is the plateau on which Kalimata fortress was located. The Inkerman battle took
place on the opposing heights to the south of the river.
