Modern city on site of an ancient Greek outpost. The small Greek fortress was named Kerkinitida. In Middle Ages the Genoese founded a 'factory' port here. Then it became a Turkish port after 1450's and finally a Russian outpost.

Parts of its wall within the modern city limits near the sea are being excavated and studied. During our educational visit in summer 1997 we were fortunate to be guided throughout the city by Dr. V. A. Kutaisov, whose book, Kerkinitida contains a discussion of the archeological history of the place and its first description by Herodotus. We have prepared an extract from this book here. Since the archeological excavation that is currently open is very small, we have only one photo, see below.

History

After the initial Greek period, Mithridates IV Evpator, (birthright of the father) founded a fortress somewhere in this region. During the middle ages the Turks built the city and called it Gozlev. When the Russians took over Crimea, Catherine II renamed the town, Evpatoria, changing its gender in the process.
Since much of our interest here was in the Kariates and we have photos of their building. We also have several photos of the famous mosque, now restored. And a short account of the architect here.
