Ruins of Desert Cathay 148 - First Mongol camp met wit hin Khazan-gol valley - Chiang-ssu-yeh on left; fir trees on slops in background. Chaing-ssu-yeh was Stein's essential and faithful interpreter - secretary assigned from the Indian mission in Kashgar for the second expedition. Stein was totally dissatisfied with the similar secretary assigned for the first expedition and much lamented this gentleman's ill health that prevented his participation in the third expedition.
