This map from Stein's book, Sand-buried Ruins of Khotan shows the first stage of his travel upon leaving India over the Kilik Pass into Sarikol. He did no survey of course while still in India. The red line depicts theroute. Note the short side trip west into Afghanistan that Stein indulged himself in to have a look down the Wakhan Corridor. The capital of Sarikol is at Tashkurghan. Rather than take the easier route from Tashkurghan down into the plain and then to Kashgar, Stein wanted to try to climb Muzagh-Ata, as Sven Hedin had done. Once north of the mountain he again chose a more difficult route to Kashgar. The map also shows the first stage of his subsequent travel from Kashgar to Yarkand -via a detour east into the desert to see Ordam-Padshah. The other red line shows his return route back to Kashgar via Yangi Hissar.
