Detail of map 43 in Innermostasia - this shows the Su-chou walled city and oasis on the Pei-ta-Ho with the route west past the great Ming fortress at Chia-yu-kuan (Now much illustrated in books and a major tourist attraction) - Stein examined the many towers and sections of wall here and determined they were NOT part of the Han wall. He was welcomed by the Chinese commander. Note how the wall blocks the narrow passage between the Pei-ta-Ho and the hills north of the river. Stein stayed in Su-chou during both the second and third expeditions.
