This was delicate work - the frescos were thin and required Stein to make special backing material to replace the support from the walls. He managed to remove some frescos during his 2nd expedition - here his team is working on others discovered during the 3rd expedition - but for many the photographs made during the 2nd expedition and published in Serindia are the only record because they were destroyed by other explorers between Stein's two visits.
