Sir Aurel Stein had a particular interest in investigating ancient
fortification. He found many ancient forts, watch towers, fortified cities and
in particular the defensive wall built by the early Han emperors to protect the
Gansu corridor route to the "western countries' from Hun raiders. Here we
have summarized some of his results as described in his reports Serindia
and Innermostasia |

Photo 202 - Refuse heap below watch tower T xxiif - Han Dynasty wall
north of Tun-huang - Note the man barely visible in this poor photo. Stein was
always looking for refuse dumps as they contained so many written documents as
well as other articles from Chinese daily life. And the totally dry climate
preserved so much unless the dump was too close to a marsh from which
underground moisture could rise.
