The Chinese Aviation Museum is about 40 miles
north of Beijing. located on a former air base that includes a hanger built
into the side of Xiao Tang hill. The former runway is about a mile from this
hanger with taxiways and aprons between them. The museum has about 200 aircraft
plus many related weapons such as anti-aircraft cannon and radars. The aircraft
include Soviet types such as MIG-15,MIG -17, and Tupolev TU-4. There are many
Chinese built aircraft and several Japanese and American aircraft as well; also
5 MIG-15 from the North Korean air force. The Chinese aircraft have
designations by type and the factories are named for the cities in which they
are located - such as Shenyang, Xi'an, Chengdu, Harbin, and Nanchang.
There are three sections in the museum. The main one is the tunnel - former
hanger - in which aircraft are parked in two rows. There are also models and
displays on the walls. Immediately inside is a special display devoted to the
Feng Ru No 2, early airplane. FengRu was the fist Chinese airplace designer.
Six years after the first Wright Brothers flight, Feng Ru successfully flew his
design.
The aircraft here include WWII Chinese and Japanese; then some post WWII types
such as MIG 15 and MIG 17 and Chinese F-2, F-5, F-6, F-7, and F-8. There are
also 4 A-5 attack aircraft and three B-5 (Chinese IL-28) and a B-5, a BT-5
trainer and a BR-5R recon aircraft. There is a Saber from the Pakistan air
force, a US Army UH-1H from Vietnam and a F-104S (gift from the Italian air
force).
Outside the tunnel is a line of 19 fighters. One is a MIG-15 from North Korea
and the others are Chinese. Four FT-2 trainers and one FT-6 trainer version of
the MIG-19; and 13 F-5, Chinese version ofthe MIG-17.
Further on is a large apron and grass area in which there are large transports
and bombers. And behind them is a row of helicopters. The bombers include two
TU-4's. There are also 2 C-46 Commandos, four Rusisan built C-47 Dakotas, an
Il-10, Il-12, and Il-14. A single Vicount, the only one China has, and AN-12,
An-24, TU-124 andsome AN-2's, The helicopters include 5 Z-5 (Mi-4) and 2 Z-6
(MI-8). There is a Be-12 flying boat on the specially built lake.
